For those of you who are new members, you can find the letter on our website at www.caseykeyassociation.com During 2010, the CKA has actively worked with the other Barrier Island League associations and with the County Commissioners to (1) preserve the privacy of our beaches, (2) limit Sarasota County's attempts to restrict the permitted activities on our private beaches and (3) correct the provisions in the flood prone area ordinance to once again permit substantial improvements to existing homes without requiring these older homes to be torn down and replaced by new construction. These efforts have taken a significant amount of the board members time, as well as, that of residents Walton Beacham and Rod Jacobson. At times the CKA has retained legal assistance to ensure its concerns are properly presented to the various county and state commissions. While we won at the County level, the fight to preserve the right to make substantial improvements to older homes continues with the Florida Building Commission and we will keep you posted on that effort. Other things in 2010 include monitoring the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. I received daily updates from the head of Sarasota County Emergency Management. Thankfully, there was no damage to our beaches. Once again, the CKA sponsored a Toy Drive for the Salvation Army which was successful thanks to the efforts of Julie DeRice and her helpers, Janet Swanson, Roberta Adams and Maggie Urciuoli. We modifed the Security Patrol schedule, thanks to the efforts of John Moore, which provided better visibility and hence greater deterence. There were significantly fewer incidents this year. We all need to be continually vigilant; so please report any suspicious activity and/or trespassing to the Sheriff's Department at 941-316-1201 (or 911 in an emergency). Thanks to imputs from past presidents Dick Davis and Archie Urciuoli and some tweaking by board member Chad Weiss, here are 5 reasons for joining the Casey Key Association (CKA): 1. The goal of the CKA is to preserve the residential character and environment that make Casey Key attractive to those who live here and those who visit. 2. The CKA provides and pays for security patrols whose purpose is to protect the well-being and property of all Casey Key residents. Approximately 80% of the dues contributed by CKA members are used to fund the security patrols. 3. The CKA works to limit county, state and federal efforts to further restrict private property rights, including private beaches, on Casey Key. 4. The CKA fosters communication and socializing among its members by sponsoring monthly "Key Mingles", the Annual Picnic and regular email communications. 5. The CKA provides a forum for discussion of issues that affect all residents on the Key and invites its members to contribute ideas and suggestions for ongoing improvement of life on the Key.
